Right..I’m back after extensive (a-hem!) research about the rest of the island.

Now I’m not a sporty type of guy but yet I don’t enjoy lying on a beach for hour after hour but the reason for starting this blog was a sentence I read on another site which read “I sat in a hammock under a group of palm trees and zzzz.” Now that has to be a reason to go!

OK so what else does the hub of The Bahamas have to offer?

Well..for the rich people amongst you there is always the casinos. According to worldcasinodirectory.com there are actually only 4 casinos currently open in the whole of The Bahamas. Well gambling isn’t my thing any more so please feel free to follow the above link for further news.

Nassau, the capital of The Bahamas, is situated on  New Providence Island.

This is the “hub” of the island archipelago. This is where the main international airport is situated and also one of the main cruise liner stopovers.

What to do on the Island

To truly experience New Providence Island, Paradise Island and Nassau it is said that you need to understand its history. The guidebooks say that the historical heart of Nassau starts in Rawson Square which is dirctly opposite the cruise liner docks (nice and convenient!).

Rawson Square is where I can find the historical government buildings and the Ministry for Tourism. I’m going to head for the Ministry first of all because I want to do I want to do something called People-to-People. This is where the Ministry teams up Bahamian families with travellers for an “evening of cultural exchange”.

Basically you seem to visit these guys in their houses, have a home-cooked meal and exchange information about your homelands then you go your separate ways. I think this sounds a cracking idea because you get the background, grass roots outlook on Bahamian life… that’s gotta be better than a dry, old tour guide surely? (I’d appreciate some comments on this if anyone has done it).

Right, I’m going to leave off for a while so I can consult the various online oracles about what to do on the rest of the island and I’ll be back to update.

Ahhh The Bahamas! Ohh! The Weather! So much to do, where are The Maps?

The weather is pleasant almost throughout the year with very little variation.
